I saw my Black starting to crack
I remember seeing an estranged family member for the first time in a decade at a funeral. They were snarky and down right unpleasant. I remember saying to my sister “see all that evil is what got them looking so old with those dark circles and bags”. Fast forward three years later and I had the same dark circles forming and I was shooketh! I was convinced that this was my karma for what I said that year but of course that was just my manic thoughts. Unfortunately it was hereditary and out of all my siblings, I’m the one that has to suffer from this. I was self-conscious and that’s when I dove into make-up, because there was no way that I would step outside with these huge dark shadows taking over my face. I watched what felt like a million YouTube videos on how to cover up dark circle. My makeup bag had 7 different concealers that I used all at once. Then I got tired of having to do my face everyday so I started to research how to get rid of the dark circles. Que another deep YouTube dive.
Where to begin?
I didn’t know where to start but I knew I didn’t want to bleach my face. I love Vybz Kartel but I was not about to buy no cake soap. So I looked up natural remedies and I tried them all and I mean all! I went to the grocery store and got the turmeric, lemon, key lime, tomatoes, honey, cucumber and I had all my spoons in my freezer. I wanted to see how they would work so I tried each for 7-10days. The first YouTube video I saw told me that I would see results in three days with the turmeric and lemon juice mix. My face determined….that was a lie.
YouTube click bate got me
When I got home from work I would put the turmeric and lemon juice paste on the dark circles and let it sit for thirty minutes to an hour depending on what I had to do that evening. Day three I saw no results but I decided to go a little longer anyways. By day ten I still didn’t see any results. The next week I used the tomato juice and lemon juice mix. Same thing happened. Nothing! I used the cucumber as an eye mask, I also bought Aloe Vera eye masks and I used all these different methods for 2 weeks at a time for a year. The comparison picture shows the difference in a year on the two bottom pictures. There was a slight improvement but I still had to wear concealer everyday which I was getting tired of.
Skincare can be expensive
I then decided to make an appointment with an esthetician for a consultation. She suggested that I do a chemical peel to get rid of the dead skin cells and to reveal new skin. Which will show my real skin concerns and in turn learn how to target the trouble areas. It would be $600 for one treatment. I lived in New York at the time so I wasn’t shocked by the price but I knew damn well that I wasn’t going to pay for it. I hopped on YouTube again and searched for chemical peels. They showed how their faces peeled for 4-7 days and some even did the procedure themselves. I was too afraid of causing more damage to my face so I scrapped the whole idea. Then I stumbled upon skin care/esthetician YouTube.
It can also be overwhelming
I followed The Golden Rx, Beauty Within, and Aysha Harun who turned into my skincare guides. I was introduced to hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, AHA’s, BHA’s, and all those other intimidating ingredients. And I say intimidating because had no idea what these things were and the word “acid” sounds like it burns. Along with their extensive tips and explanations on how to use these product I did my own google search as a way to verify and learn how to apply to my skin concern which is oiliness. The top picture was taken May 3rd 2020 which shows my two year progress with my new skincare routine.
It gets easier when you do your research
I used The Ordinary product because they were recommended and had the lowest price point. I copped the hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, niacinamide and retinol. The most expensive product I used was Caudalie, who’s Glycolic Peel Mask and Vinoperfect Radiance Serum actually worked on my hyperpigmentation. The only reason I stopped using it was because I was on a budget, so after the trial size I had finished I never repurchased. These products were all giving me results but it was when I followed The Golden Rx 60 second rule that I noticed improvements every day. The 60 second rules is a tool to use when washing your face. Wash for 60 seconds, this is you working the product into the skin for the ingredients to actual penetrate and be effective.
It won’t happen overnight – Be patient
It has been two years and I’m happy with my skin but the perfectionist in me knows that there’s still more work to do. It’s time to change products. My Ordinary products have finished and as much as I love them I have received new information on The Inkey List which has a better formulation so I have purchased and I’m ready to try them out. Make sure you check out The Golden Rx oil cleansing video, I just started doing this so I don’t have much to say about it yet.
It’s an extensive 10 step routine but I use my shower time as my self-care time. I put on one of my playlist based on my mood for the night and just take my time pampering myself. It may seem like a lot at first but once you get into it you wouldn’t want it any other way.
